This tour provides a deeper insight into Georgia’s history and remarkable cultural heritage. We explore the masterpieces of art and architecture from various periods of Georgian history – ranging from prehistoric times, the Colchida civilization, the Middle Ages then to the modern era.

Main destinations are famous archaeological sites, museums, and ancient fortresses; cave towns and churches with unique wall paintings. The holiday is constructed to take us to mountainous areas where we relax after the more intensive excursions. In Tbilisi we suggest visiting art workshops and exhibitions. We go to Georgian folk dances and concerts – if available. 

Outline Itinerary:

Day 1: Arrive Tbilisi. Day 2: Full day city tour of Tbilisi. Day 3: Trip south of Tbilisi to Dmanisi archeological sites where the relics of the first human migration in Europe were found. Visit Bolnisi basilica and if time permits Tsugrugasheni church. Night in Tbilisi. Day 4: Excursion to Mtskheta, the ancient capital of Georgia. On the way to Kutaisi visit Kintsvisi Church. Night in Kutaisi. Day 5: Visit Bagrati Cathedral and Gelati Monastery. Today we will also travel to Racha province where we’ll pay visit to Nikortsminda Church. Night in Kutaisi. Day 6: Drive to Nokalakevi, capital of ancient Georgian state Lazica (4th to 8th cc). From Nokalakevi drive to Martvili church (8th c.). Night in Kutaisi. Optional visit to Vani Archeological Museum. Day 7: Drive to Bakuriani resort in the Mountains of the Minor Caucasus. On the way visit Timotesubani Church. Night in Bakuriani. Day 8: Excursion to the cave town of Vardzia. On the way back to Bakuriani visit Sapara Monastery. Day 9: Trip to Gori. Excursion to Uplistsikhe cave town and to Ateni Sioni Church. Night to Tbilisi. Day 10: Excursion to David Gareji Monastery. On the way to Telavi visit two-dome Kvelatsminda Church. Night in Telavi. Day 11: Excursion in and around Telavi to visit Alaverdi Cathedral, Kvetera Church, Ikalto Academy and Shuamta Nunnery Night in Telavi. Day 12: Visit the Palace and Museum of King Erekle II. Excursion to Gremi architectural complex and Ninotsminda Church (6^th c.). Night in Tbilisi. Day 13: Tbilisi free day or visit museums, art galleries, etc. Day 14: End of the tour.
